SHOPLIFTERS and other miscreants might be advised to give Alresford a wide berth.

The town is officially launching its new Shopwatch and Pubwatch schemes tomorrow (Friday, May 18).

Traders and publicans have taken delivery of more than 20 walkie talkies to keep in touch with each other and police.

It will enable shopkeepers to pass on details about anyone acting suspiciously.

The radios are also equipped with a panic button to alert fellow traders and police to emergencies.

A similar scheme already operates in Winchester, supported by the city’s Business Improvement District.

Bringing it to Alresford was the brainchild of PCSO Steve Hull and Alresford town councillor, Natalie Carpenter.

She said: “It is for the benefit of all businesses in Alresford and will help to contribute to the community spirit between businesses.”

She added: “Alresford is a lovely town and crime is low. This system will help to keep it that way and engender the sense of safety and community between all businesses day and night.”

PCSO Hull said: “Alresford is a low crime area, but this will definitely help to get the shops and pubs talking.”

They handed out the walkie talkies last Saturday (May 12), which have cost the traders taking part £135 each.

It took place outside the Co-op store in West Street, which has agreed to cover the £75 licence needed for the radios.
