THE summer programme at Winchester Discovery Centre has been revealed with a host of exhibitions, shows and workshops.

It includes Faster, Higher in The Gallery, which is a moving image installation that will be on show from May 26 to July 15.

It will be followed by 85 specially selected photographs from the International Garden Photographer of the Year contest, from July 21 to September 30.

The City Space Gallery at the venue in Jewry Street will also be busy. From May 26 to July 1 it will host Creative Force, which features the work of local artists with paintings, textiles and glassware.

Entry to both galleries is free.

Several paid-for talks and workshops are also planned, including the visit of film-maker Ben Anderson on May 23.

He has worked on documentaries for BBC and Channel 4 and written a book about working on the front line in Afghanistan, No Worse Enemy.

Then on June 1, authors Elizabeth Haynes and Sarah Rayner will present The Big Book Group.

For younger visitors, the Hiccup Theatre will present The Owl and the Pussycat for ages three and up on June 3.

Then on July 1, the Long Nose Puppets will present Penguin, based on the award-winning book by Polly Dunbar. It will include songs by Tom Gray of Gomez.

Staying with music, the London Bridge Ensemble will perform The Schubert Piano Trios on June 10.

The venue is also hosting several events in the Winchester Guitar Festival, from June 15 to 17.

Singer and songwriter Ben Montague will then perform on June 22 to promote his second studio album, with support from Kristyna Myles.

The live music continues with New Orleans folk and blues songwriter Andrew Duhon on July 18. He will be joined by Australian slide guitarist Kara Grainger.

The Discovery Centre is also planning some writing workshops, including one for youngsters on the subject of Doctor Who.

It will be held on July 7 and attended by Doctor Who writers Simon Guerrier, Peter Anghelides and JT Colgan along with the voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs.

Two workshops are also being hosted by Brian Evans-Jones. The first, on May 26, focuses on poetry, while the second, on July 14, will concentrate on creating characters for fiction.
