Winchester adults are the most active in Hampshire, according to the latest survey.
Some 34 per cent of residents take part in moderate sport and physical activity for 30 minutes on five occasions each week, say Sport England analysing data between April 2010-2011.
The figure is higher than those for Hampshire (23 per cent) and England (21.5 per cent).
Stuart Barlow, chairman of the Winchester District Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) said: ‘I am delighted with this news. Through the SPAA we have supported the development of initiatives including Return to Sport, Health Walks, Running England, Exercise Referral and Community Classes.”
Cllr Pat Stallard, city council’s portfolio holder for culture heritage and sport added: “This is fantastic news for the SPAA and the council. It proves that working together to deliver projects really does work.”
2012 will be a busy year as the countdown begins to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Some of the larger local events planned include the Winchester Sports Festival on May 20, the Personal Bests schools final on June 27, the Olympic Torch Relay on July 11 and the London 2012 Community Live Site screen in the Outer Cathedral Close during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
