SAFETY campaigners are poised to celebrate victory in their fight for a road crossing in Winchester.

They have been lobbying for a crossing on St Cross Road near the busy Stanmore Lane junction for years.

County and city councillor Brian Collin revealed tonight at the town forum that Hampshire County Council was ready to fund the measure.

Cllr Collin told the meeting: “I have the funding. The leader of Hampshire County council is going to agree to it on Friday.”

Local MP Steve Brine was due to meet county environment chief Mel Kendal to discuss the issue on Friday.

Cllr Collin revealed the news when pressed by local city councillor Robert Sanders.

For more on this story and others from the town forum see next week's Hampshire Chronicle, out on February 2.
