SOME stores in Winchester have seen a drop in trade because of market stalls being outside their front doors.
The details emerged at the monthly meeting of the city’s Business Improvement District this morning (Tuesday, November 15).
Its executive director, Chris Turner, said they had asked High Street stores if their trade was down.
A few shops in the section running east from Upper Brook Street had reported a slight drop this summer, he said.
It comes after market traders expanded into the High Street from Middle Brook Street with city council permission.
After complaints about disruption from existing traders, the local authority agreed to review the decision.
That review is in progress and will decide if the stalls should be reduced, spaced out, banned altogether, or allowed to stay.
Prof Turner said he wrote to council leader Cllr George Beckett earlier this week with the results from the stores to assist the review.
A decision from the local authority is expected within a few weeks.
