UNEMPLOYMENT in Winchester climbed to its highest level for two months last month.

The number of people claiming job seeker’s allowance in December was 873, up from 853 in November and just below the figure of 877 in October.

The December figure is 1.2 per cent of the population of working age, 16-64 years.

Joblessness in the Winchester district is still a minor problem compared to the early 1990s when it peaked at 3,060, some 4.8 per cent.

The lowest level was in December 2000 when it fell to just 410, a rate of 0.6 per cent.
