IT WAS a display that Robert Carlyle and his steelworker friends would have been proud of.

Six members of Weeke Community Centre in Winchester drove a crowd of women wild, performing the Full Monty strip-tease.

The men strutted their stuff to Tom Jones’s classic You Can Leave Your Hat On, helping to raise around £2000 for Children in Need.

Pete North, who organised the dance as well as performing, said the routine went off without a hitch.

He said: “Some of the lads were a bit nervous waiting in the wings but then the adrenalin took over. I was more nervous about the rest of the event not working. But the routine all went to time and we got a great reaction from the crowd.

“Despite our age we had a lot of women rushing to the stage and thankfully there was a lot of cheering at the right times.”

Fellow performer Wayne O’Connell, 30, said he loved performing the routine and wanted to do it again.

He said: “I had been looking forward to it for ages and I would definitely do it again anytime.”

Anyone hoping for a repeat performance will be disappointed as Mr North, 46, said it was a one time event.

He said: “It’s definitely going to be a one-off for me. I don’t think it would quite have the same impact if I did it again.”

The dance was part of a sell-out charity night at the centre in Taplins Road which also included a Moulin Rouge burlesque dance from some of the community centre ladies.

Mr North said the group were hoping to put on an annual dance for charity, and next year would hope to work with the ladies.

He said: “This was the only Full Monty we were going to do but it’s not the last event we want to do. In the future we will be going for a girls and boys dance routine, hopefully a cabaret, to raise money for local charity.”

Gemma North, manager of the community centre, said the routine helped make the evening a great success as it was the first time an event at the centre had ever sold out.

She said: “We usually never sell out an event but this was the first time ever and we sold all the tickets in advance. Everything ran smoothly thankfully and there were no hiccups. It was really fun.

“I didn’t get home until about 4am so I am absolutely shattered, but it was a fantastic night.”
