Pro-campaign for Sainsbury’s Pro-campaign for Sainsbury’s

A PRO-Sainsbury’s group has raised the stakes in the long-running debate about the superstore opening in Bishop’s Waltham.

The group, Bishop’s Waltham Another View (BWAV), wants to see the new supermarket open on the edge of town on the Abbey Mill site.

BWAV, which has been set up with the help of Sainsbury’s marketing company, GKA, now has 44 members on its Facebook page.

Peter Watson, 52, chairman of BWAV, said: “Bishop’s Waltham is a growing town and we believe that the new Sainsbury’s would provide an increased shopping choice, create hundreds of new jobs for local people, and attract shoppers from the surrounding area to stay in our town, all whilst saving millions of road miles every year and an increase in passing trade for business in the High Street.

“Not everyone can easily reach existing supermarkets or can afford to do a main shop in Bishop’s Waltham because they don’t drive or have a limited income.

“A new affordable supermarket, coupled with a brand new doctors’ surgery at Abbey Mill, would be a real lifeline to many people in the town and Meon Valley.”

As reported in the Hampshire Chronicle last week, more than 100 members of BWAG, which opposes the opening of the 35,000 sq ft store, handed in a 4,500 signature petition to council bosses in Winchester on July 31.

Tony Kippenberger, chairman of the BWAG, said: “Since the plans have been discussed for 18 months amidst a great deal of publicity, the formation of a new supporters’ Facebook group with around 44 members, just before the formal consultation period ends, sounds like too little, too late to me.”

Both groups are now asking members for a show of support at a parish council meeting in the town’s Jubilee Hall tonight to discuss the application.

BWAV, whose website was part set up by Sainsbury’s marketing company, said it was keeping the supermarket at “arms length”, but added GKA put supporters in touch with each other.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “We are obviously pleased that a group has formed to back our proposals which will help to give a more balanced view of local feeling throughout the rest of the planning process.”

The news comes as Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery objected to plans for the supermarket, claiming it would harm the town’s shops.

He said: “Although I know there are divided opinions about a supermarket in Bishop’s Waltham, I have always said that if there is a risk of harm to the town centre and its wide range of shops, then I would object.”

When are people going to accept that High St shops & corner shops are a thing of the past?

Good luck BWAV.

Dear Schlong of Winchester...why DO high street shops have to be a thing of the past? You don't live here so best be quiet, eh?

Ha Ha! Always another side to the story!!
As always money rules, nothing changes...
Sainsbury's will get their store no matter what the opposition think....
It's called progress... tee hee!

Dear Toerag of Winchester...a little wager, perhaps? All around the UK an increasing number of successes are being achieved on a monthly basis against the Big 4 supermarkets. It will happen here, too.

And what credibility do they have being organised by Sainsbury's PR team? Don't make me laugh.......

We don't need, we don't want it, build it somewhere else..

I don't have to keep quite - I believe anyone is free to post on here as it is still a relatively free country.

My point, I believe is valid, whether it be Bishops Waltham or any other town. High St shops are a thing of the past as they cannot offer the prices or range of products supermarkets offer. It's called 'progress', yes unfortunately there will be victims, but then there always has been in the name of progress. It's 2010 & there are more choices than ever where you want to do your shopping. If High St shops are failing, why? Because they are expensive compared to supermarkets & if the majority really wanted for the High St shops to remain, they'd shop there - but they don't.

Unfortunately your comment of 'best keep quiet' is one reflective of most NIMBYs attitude in this part of the country.

Again, good luck BMAV.

Pro group set up with the help of Sainsbury's marketing department? Sounds a bit fishy to me. I wonder what "special offers" they made to entice people to their cause. Hmmm.

In my opinion the shop keepers have pulled the wool over many eyes in Bishops Waltham, including the parish council.
The real facts and the real incentive actually is to the town itself.
If only more people in the "Anti Progress brigade" could see
BW currently has a 25 year old doctors surgery 50% over its original designed capacity for patients, NHS isn't going to pay for a new one, are the shop keepers going to pay for one?
This is why the BW doctors actually approached Sainsbury's.(Fact)
I'm all for a town with medieval heritage, but surely it would be better as someone has already stated, to do without a "Medieval Surgery"
Can the high street shops create 300-350 new jobs in the town?
Another fact- English Heritage does not, and will not object to the supermarket.(That's already in writing already)
Would another 70 home with an average of 1.5 cars per house help peak time traffic in the town?
Or,
Another eye sore industrial estate next to the palace ruins with many more than 12 lorries each day going in and out of town clogging up roads and polluting the planet?
Worst of all do nothing and put it in the "too hard basket" for another few years, it's an eye sore waste land now, let's do something with it!
How about the people who currently drive from the town and surrounding area will save around 3 million miles driving each year and spend more in the local shops?
The elderly and others on fixed incomes, who can't afford to run a car may actually have a better choice, this would be a benefit for all wouldn't it?
I think the smart people in the town and surrounding villages in the area will soon work this out.
Why not have a look at and join: Bishops Waltham - Another View (BWAV) and look at some positive facts and say "YES TO SAINSBURY'S" 106 new members in 3 weeks is saying something isn’t it!
Hopefully Winchester City Council will see the positives and sanity will prevail because, Bishops Waltham needs this now!
