Hospital saluted for helping armed forces

THE trust that runs the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester has been saluted for helping the armed forces.

Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust has been given a Certificate of Support for the backing it provides to medical reservists.

They include Iain Appleton who is a radiographer in Winchester but also a member of Territorial Army 306 Hospital Support Medical Regiment.

He said: “Without the trust’s support it would be difficult to be a member of the reserve forces.

“We have 19 days training in the TA every year, and although much of this is in the evening or at weekends, there is an annual training camp that takes up a lot of annual leave.

“The trust supports this by allowing me to take additional unpaid leave as well as one week of paid leave.”

He joined the trust’s chairman, Mike Gretton, himself a retired vice admiral, to collect the certificate at a ceremony in Portsmouth.

Mr Gretton said: “My naval background has given me personal experience of the vital work that the reserve forces do, and as trust chair I am very proud of the recognition of the support we offer.”

The certificate is now on display in the hospital reception area.
