VOLUNTEERS are desperately needed to help keep a vital community service running in Winchester.
The British Red Cross runs the medical equipment loan service, which provides items such as wheelchairs to vulnerable people in the city.
Medical loan co-ordinator, Ray Knight, who works at Red Cross House, Winnal Close, said: “For a person with mobility problems, having a wheelchair or walking aid can mean the difference between staying in hospital or being independent in their own home.
“We desperately need more volunteers to help us keep this vital service running five days a week. We like to have two volunteers on each shift for safety, as well as the social pleasure to be gained from volunteering.
“It’s a great feeling when you have helped someone who needed the service. They walk away happier and so do you.”
Volunteers would need to demonstrate how to use and maintain wheelchairs and other items, monitor delivery and collection of equipment and check it on return.
