A DETAILED book on Winchester’s historic streets and buildings has officially been launched.

The event at the city’s Discovery Centre to promote Winchester – Heart of a City attracted dozens of guests.

They were keen to get a signed copy of Andrew Rutter’s book, which is the result of several years’ work.

For nearly a quarter of a century he was Winchester City Council’s heritage expert, before retiring a decade ago.

He has now produced a 300-page full colour volume on England’s ancient capital, which is published by P&G Wells in College Street.

The firm’s bookshop in is thought to be the oldest of its kind in Britain. During the 18th century it also published books there, but Winchester – Heart of a City is thought to be its first new title for around 200 years.

Copies can be bought at P&G Wells for £35, along with several other city bookstores.

Preservation group, The City of Winchester Trust, has also backed the project.

At the launch, its president, His Honour Judge Christopher Clark QC, offered his praise.

He said: “This book will give immense pleasure and no little knowledge to all of us who care about Winchester, its history, its architecture and its setting.

“In future any architect, developer or planner concerned with a site in or near the conservation area of this city will look to this magnificent book to see what Andrew Rutter has to say about it.”

Cash from the late American financier, Albert H Gordon, also supported the book. His son, Dan, is set to receive a special edition of the book shortly.
