A SUMMIT to discuss the impact of students in Winchester will be held in Stanmore later this month.

Four residents’ groups on the estate are holding a meeting at Winchester Family Church in Stanmore Lane.

They have invited city council staff, police, and university chiefs to the event.

Stanmore is one of the most popular areas for student housing in Winchester, as it is near the city’s university.

Many former council houses, bought under right to buy, are now owned by landlords and have become houses of multiple occupation.

Mike Gardner, who chairs neighbourhood group, Stanmore Combined, said: “The university is a great asset to the city of Winchester but the effects on this local community, by way of housing, parking and other issues, need to be discussed. This meeting gives us all a chance to start on this task.”

Deputy vice chancellor, Tommy Geddes, will be setting out the university’s stall on the night.

It comes after the university struggled to find enough places to house all of its new students this term.

Some were placed in an Eastleigh hotel while others found themselves in a Winchester old folks’ home, along with a former hostel for the homeless.

Rebecca Goulding, the council’s acceptable behaviour co-ordinator, and PC Emma Port from the safer neighbourhoods team are also due to attend the summit.

Landlords and student union leaders are also being invited to the event.

It will be held on Thursday, November 19, and doors will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
