WHAT do Buckingham Palace, Ronnie Scott and the Hammersmith Palais all have in common?

They are all second fiddle to a Hampshire nightspot that has just been crowned the best jazz venue in British history.

The Concorde Club in Eastleigh has beaten a string of world famous venues to win the first Kind Of Blue award.

Organiser Benjamin Webb was flooded with votes from music-lovers from across the country who thought the club in Stoneham Lane deserved the national acclaim.

He said: “The jazz fans have spoken, they choose the Concorde Club as their winner and it is very worthy of the title in my opinion.

“The award is really a testament to the pivotal role the venue has had in the British jazz scene, it is remarkable.”

Music legends who have found stardom after playing on its hallowed stage range from saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster to Joe Cocker, Elton John and Rod Stewart and jazzman Jamie Cullum.

Owner and founder Cole Mathieson said: “I am absolutely delighted. I can’t believe it to be honest, we were overjoyed just to be on the list.

“I’ve always liked to think our club is special and that people have a great time here but it is so flattering to have it confirmed in this way.”
