Intech finds its 'spaceman'

THE search for the ‘Winchester spaceman’ has been brought to a close.

The Intech Science Centre at Morn Hill on the city’s outskirts has been looking for somebody to dress as an astronaut.

It has bought a replica of the spacesuits worn by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969.

The centre wanted somebody to wear it and become the venue’s official greeter and pose for photographs with visitors.

Intech had expected plenty of applicants, though in the end it was more a trickle, but they still found the right man for the job.

The helmet and suit have gone to Jonathan Wood, who lives in the Bereweeke area of Winchester.

He is currently studying a master's degree in physics at the University of Manchester, which helps him to answer some of the more technical questions posed by visitors.

Along with dressing in the suit, his more down-to-earth duties sometimes include directing parking and helping to maintain the grounds.
