MAJOR improvements to Winchester High Street will be shown to the public next Friday. (JUL17) Local businesses and residents will have the chance to find out about the joint city and county council scheme.
The High Street, said to be the oldest in the country, will be re-paved from Jewry Street to Middle Brook Street.
The county council has come in for widespread criticism for the poor quality of much of the stones and the frequent trips and falls that it causes, especially to the blind and elderly.
Ken Thornber, leader of Hampshire County Council, said: “The High Street currently has uneven paving in some areas, and this scheme will improve it from top to bottom for all who use it, using natural stone paving to enhance Winchester’s buildings and monuments.”
Cllr thorber added: “Over 15,000 people pass through the High Street every day and, once complete, I think the improvements will benefit Winchester’s businesses, residents and visitors for many years to come.”
The project, which will be undertaken in phases, will begin this September and is due for completion in October 2010.
George Beckett, leader of the city council, said: “We understand the importance of enhancing the current High Street whilst maintaining ‘business as usual’.
This will be extended over the Christmas shopping season when there will be a seven-week break. This is an exciting project and I hope it will ultimately have a very positive impact on our historic High Street for all those who use it”.
The exhibition will be held in the Saxon Suite of the Guildhall and will be open to the public from 1–5.30pm.
Members of the project team and the contractor will be on hand to discuss the project and answer any questions.
Following the exhibition, plans will be on display at public information points at Winchester City Council’s offices in Colebrook Street and the county council information centre in Mottisfont Court at the top of the High Street.
