A MOTORIST was airlifted to hospital after a car crash on the A34 north of Winchester. Police said the red BMW they were driving collided with a white Citroen van near South Wonston. The accident happened at around 2.30pm and blocked the southbound carriageway for nearly five hours. Around half an hour after the car and van collided, another crash occurred on the other side of the road. A Toyota car, a Volkswagen van and a Vauxhall van were involved in the second accident. There were no reports of serious injuries. The northbound carriageway was blocked for around an hour. Meanwhile, the BMW driver was cut out of the wreckage of their car and taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance. Police said the motorist was being treated for serious head injuries, while the driver of the Citroen van did not need to go to hospital. Anyone who witnessed the crash involving the BMW and Citroen van is being urged to call police. Ring the Whitchurch roads policing unit on 0845 045 4545 if you think you can help.
