WINCHESTER preservation watchdogs have lined up a series of evening walks around the city over the summer.

The walks by the City of Winchester Trust start on June 4 when city guide Elizabeth Proudman will lead a tour on the Victorian city.

On June 11 the pubs of Winchester will be the subject, led by local author Phil Yates.

On June 15, the unusual subject will be the semi-detached house, with George Saumarez Smith, a director of Robert Adam Architects.

The walks start at 6.30pm from the Heritage Centre in Upper Brook Street. The suggested donation is £2.

The full itinerary is: July 2, the western suburb of St Pauls, with Richard Baker, retired architect, (meet by the Westgate); July 9, Ashburton Court, far and near, with Andrew Rutter, retired conservation officer, meet at St Giles Hill; July 23, development opportunities for Winchester, Keith Leaman, architect; July 30, Owen Browne Carter’s Winchester, with Robin Freeman, architectural historian; In August, the walks are August 6, Colebrook Street, then and now, with city guide Tony Humphrys (meet in Abbey Gardens); August 20, 1,000 years of bellringing in the cathedral, Colin Cook, city guide, (meet outside West door of cathedral); August 27, A biography of Southgate Street, Graham Scobie, Winchester Museum Service.

The last one is on September 3, Wolvesey, with Michael Carden, trust vice-chairman.
