MORE than 10,000 drivers have paid by phone to park their cars in Winchester since the scheme was introduced in April.
The city council now has added Colebrook Street car park, to its pay-by-phone parking network.
A spokesman said the pay-by-phone scheme has been hugely popular with Winchester motorists since it was launched in April.
To date, more than 10,000 transactions have been made using the system and the council is keen to increase the number of car parks covered by the scheme.
The gives drivers the option to top-up their payment if they are unexpectedly delayed in getting back to their vehicle.
Registered users receive text alerts on their phones when their parking session is due to expire; they then have the option to return to their car or to extend their parking session at the press of a few buttons.
Richard Hein, parking manager, said: "The pay-by-phone system is proving to be very popular with motorists in Winchester, which is why we have decided to extend the system to incorporate our Colebrook Street car park."
Keith Wood, the portfolio holder for planning and access, added: "I am really pleased that there has been such a good take-up of this new system. Pay-by-phone parking is part of a wider programme to make our car parks more customer friendly."
