I was astonished to read David Killeen’s letter last week lavishing praise on the disgraced Southern Water for running round the clock sewage tankers through our villages.

He seems under the illusion that this is a good thing.

Did he consider why the high groundwater is getting into the sewage pipes? These pipes are supposed to be water tight to prevent sewage leaching out of the pipes when ground water levels are low. This should ring alarm bells.

Does he wonder what is preventing the installed pumping stations from pumping away the sewage. Are there issues at the receiving waste water treatment works?

Do we know where Southern Water’s tankers are taking this sewage? Is it optimistic to hope that it isn’t being dumped elsewhere without treatment?

Fundamentally this is another legacy of Southern Water’s underinvestment and failed maintenance permitted by the Conservative government. Perhaps next week Mr Killeen will be commending our local fly tippers or the Conservative party themselves for letting our country fall into such a terrible state of disrepair?
