A PIECE of art by Winchester's Banksy that was only discovered about a month ago has reportedly been vandalised.

As previously reported, Hendog, an anonymous graffiti artist, painted a girl playing with a daisy chain on the St George's Square Bus Shelter in Bishop’s Waltham.

A small daisy chain was also left running near the mural, creating the illusion that it is coming out of the wall.

The artist shared an Instagram story showing himself at the mural late on Sunday, February 11.

The Chronicle was alerted to the vandalism on Sunday, March 17 and photos show a cross has been painted over the artwork.

Hampshire Chronicle: The vandalised artwork

Chloe Field, the manager of  nearby The Crown Inn pub, said: "I know it has been vandalised and I think it is disgraceful but I don't know who did it or anything like that."

She said she first noticed it had been vandalised on Friday, March 15.

She added: "Why would you want to do that? I think it is quite a nice piece of artwork to be honest.

"It could have been done in the middle of the night, it could of been kids or it could have been anybody. Whoever has done it isn't going to admit to it but I thought it was quite cute."

Other Hendog murals in Winchester include a series of teddy bears, a young girl picking flower petals in Market Street, and ‘Christmas Kev’ by Winchester Bus Station.

The street artist had also made his mark at the bottom of St Catherine’s Hill more than two years ago with his original piece ‘boy with a kite’ on the wall next to the footpath by The Handlebar Café.

Hampshire police has been contacted for information.
