HAMPSHIRE patients are happy with the care they get from the Primary Care Trust (PCT), according to a recent survey.

Services in the county did well across the board in the Local Health Services Survey, 2008, with some scoring above the national average in some areas.

Hampshire's PCT excelled in the fact that patients could make an appointment three days in advance and that they thought doctors listened carefully to what they had to say. The trust also excelled in the way doctors explained reasons for patients' treatment.

The Local Health Services Survey is conducted every year across 60 PCTs and is used to gain the views of patients, and their experiences of primary care.

More than 1,000 patients were selected randomly and were sent the questionnaire to complete, asking for their experiences over the past year.

The questions covered a wide range of patient care, including making an appointment, visiting the practice and seeing the doctor, medicines, referrals and health promotion.

"Services did well with some scoring above the national average in some areas."

So in most areas, most services were below the national average. That isn't good. That is consistently bad!

Wow, some positive spin for primary care, a nice change. However how many people out of the "more than a thousand" returned their questionnaires to the PCT, and why aren't we told? On face value, at best the survey would be sent roughly to one person in 1300 in Hampshire representing roughly 5 patients per GP. The average patient sees their GP 3 or 4 times a year. So the representation of patient experience is tiny at best before we find out how many replies were received back. Is this real research or simply random variation from a tiny sample?
