We are privileged to be hosting a Ukrainian family. It has been an enjoyable six months. Our family is welcome to stay longer, but we must plan for the future to get a roof over their heads.

England is to be their home, rather than returning to their battered homeland.

We are meeting with the council's letting department, Test Valley Lettings with Sarah Sign who leads the team, but there is a massive demand for rental homes.

A vacancy will attract 20-plus applicants. To be accepted they will have to nominate an acceptable guarantor and a credit history of steady employment/income over the past 12 months.

They can provide neither so understandably will not be considered by most estate agents

Test Valley has an obligation to provide a roof. In the worst cases, this may be a hotel or hostel.

In most cases, the family will consist of a mother and one or two children. Fathers are left at home to defend their battered country.

Test Valley lettings is trying to house these desperate families. They need sympathetic landlords, who can overlook bureaucratic regulations.

Test Valley Lettings are in a position to ease the wheels. The letting service is free. They will regularly inspect the property and support both parties.

At present, the family gets financial help and the landlord gets security.

There is a strong hub of Ukrainians in the area and an ever-increasing demand.

The local community, schools, NHS, fundraisers, church groups, the Rapids, the list goes on, yes Romsey is doing its bit - THANK YOU.

If you are interested in renting out your property to Ukrainian nationals contact Ukraine Support Team via email refugeesupport@testvalley.gov.uk or call 01264 368000.

Thank you.
