Race for Life needs volunteer helpers

ORGANISERS of Cancer Research UK's Winchester Race for Life are calling for the SAS to help them at this year's event on Sunday, June 1, at River Park.

The SAS they are looking for is a Special Action Squad - a team of city residents and workers who simply want to volunteer their time and energy to help out on the day.

Around 2,500 women are expected to walk, jog or run 5k as part of Winchester's Race for Life but the charity also needs volunteers to help supervise the event.

Cancer Research UK's Event Manager, Hannah White, said that the event would not happen without the SAS team.

She added: "Putting on a Race for Life event is like a major military operation which starts long before the first participants arrive and ends long after the last one crosses the finish line. There are a huge variety of important tasks that need to be done, including helping to set up the 5k course and main event area; marshalling the course; assisting in the information marquee and handing out water, goody bags and medals at the finish."

She is looking for men and women of all ages to lend their enthusiasm and dedication on the day and anyone who signs up will receive a special volunteer t-shirt to wear on the day.

Miss White added: "We can guarantee volunteers a fun, inspiring and rewarding experience.

"They'll get a buzz from helping to deliver a successful event as part of a great team of like-minded people from across the local community.

"And they'll also pick-up organisational, communication and fundraising skills while enabling the thousands of women taking part to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK's pioneering work."

To register for the Winchester Race for Life Special Action Squad call Hannah on 07918 674558. To enter Race for Life visit www.raceforlife.org/southwest or call the hotline on 0871 641 2279.
