A WINCHESTER drug driver has avoided a disqualification because of the short distance driven.

Ahmed Awod Babikir, 32, of Winnall Close, Winnall, was driving a 57-reg Hyundai Getz when stopped by police near his home on May 31, magistrates in Basingstoke heard.

Babikir admitted driving with an illegal level of cannabis in his system.

The exact length of the 'short distance' was unavailable.

Magistrates fined him £323, ordered he pay a victim surcharge of £32 and have eight penalty points put on his licence.
