THE contents of a Winchester pub garden are to be sold for charity before bulldozers move in.

Most of the garden of The Queen in Kingsgate Road, St Cross, are earmarked for development by Winchester College.

So landlord Clive Mansell is selling the contents in aid of the Winchester Hospice appeal.

Mr Mansell said the piece of land has had links to brewing for some 300 years as it was used to grow hops in the early 1700s before becoming a pub garden.

A new garden is planned which will use part of the current car park but to make space for the construction a sale of pub items will take place this Sunday September 2, 12 noon and 4pm.

It will include unwanted pub and garden furniture, bric-a-brac, shrubs, brollies, and even goldfish. Viewing is on Saturday between 3pm and 7pm.

All proceeds go to the hospice that is planned for Burrell House on Romsey Road next to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

Mr Mansell said: “We are unsure when the bulldozers will start but have been told that fences marking the new boundaries will be going up within a few weeks.”
