OBSERVERS of the Winchester scene may be forgiven for a slight feeling, not of boredom exactly, but weariness at the proposals to revamp the city centre, officially known as the Central Winchester Regeneration but more widely known as Silver Hill 2.

The scheme has been in gestation since the late 1990s when Stagecoach started to express interest in redeveloping the bus station. The first scheme collapsed and now things are starting to simmer with the agreement of the planning framework that in theory should guide the concrete proposals.

However everyone can get excited about the ideas for how the River Park Leisure Centre will be transformed, the subject of the front page story.

With the sports centre heading to Bar End once planning permission is given that leaves a large 1980s sports centre. Many of the sports facilities will stay such as the tennis courts, football pitches and the Riverside Indoor Bowling Club which opened in 1997.

But a large building will be surplus to sporting requirements. Council leader Caroline Horrill wants it replaced with something cultural. The former High Sheriff Alan Lovell has suggested it as the site for an Anglo-Saxon Museum that would tell the story of the development of the English language.

Everyone will have their ideas. The city council is launching an informal policy group next month to hear them. Here’s a chance to have your say.
