A WET and wild finish marked the end of another brilliant and bizarre Boomtown last night (Sunday, August 12).

The five day festival, held at the Matterley Estate, near Winchester, was brought to a climatic end in torrential rain.

But that did little to dampen the spirits of revellers at the popular music event.

Last night, thousands braved the downpour as the festival’s big name closing acts prepared to take to the stage.

They included the likes of British electronic duo, Maribou State, and iconic American rap rock band, Limp Bizkit, while multi-Grammy award winner Ben Harper, famous for mixing genres including blues, folk and soul, also performed.

Boomtown organisers also kept their cards close to their chest over their famous ‘secret headliner’ - despite a swathe of strong rumours before the festival even started.

Drum and bass star Andy C and legendary British group Chase and Status were among those rumoured to be lined-up for the secret slot.

And it was the former who closed the final night, with a hefty array of drum and bass, accompanied by dazzling lights and flames.

The climatic finish followed a hiccup-free few days for the festival.

Last year, the event was criticised for huge '10 hour long' queues and in 2016 was it clouded by the death of an 18-year-old and a fire which destroyed 82 cars.

But it was the brilliant music and the festival’s ever-creative stages which made the headlines this year.

And of all the acts to perform, it was world famous group, Gorillaz, who drew the biggest crowd.

Damon Albarn’s virtual alternative rock wowed fans with a two hour set - ended with a simple message to the fans: “Boomtown, you’ve been a dream.”

There were plenty of other acts for the 60,000 fans to enjoy across the main four days.

Among them were Walsall-born musician Goldie, alternative rockers Enter Shikari and electronic punk duo Sleaford Mods.

This year was the first year the festival was given the go-ahead for a fifth day – open to fans who travelled to the ground by ‘sustainable transport’.
