A WINCHESTER initiative has been shortlisted for a cash boost as part of supermarket Tesco's Bags of Help scheme.

Winchester’s Paralympic Personal Best event could receives grants of £4,000, £2,000 or £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores, if voted for before the June 30 deadline.

The event, put on by Winchester City Council in conjunction with Winchester Go LD and River Park Leisure Centre, celebrates the success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games every year by providing a day full of sports activities for those with a range of additional needs to take part and compete against their own ability.

The aim is to bring children and adults with additional needs together to take part in a safe event providing an opportunity for participants to enjoy a range of sports which will promote and raise awareness of disability sport.

Calum Drummond, council sports development manager, said: “This event has become increasingly popular over recent years proving our commitment to develop disability sports participation within the district. The joy that this day brings to everyone involved makes the months of hard work and planning worth it”.

The initiative will be going up against ORCA (teaching local school children about dolphins and whales) and FWRD (Festival Waste Reclamation and Distribution).

Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store, each time they shop. The participating stores are Alresford Express, Kings Worthy Express, Market Winchester Express, Harestock Express and Winchester Extra.
