THOUSANDS of pounds was raised towards funding a new children’s emergency department in Southampton at a red, white and blue themed ball.

More than 300 guests partied the night away at the Make A Difference (MAD) Ball in aid of the Murray Parish Trust’s #2MillionSteps appeal.

The new department will care for seriously ill and injured children from across the South.

Along with raising money for the new department at University Hospital Southampton were entertained by dancers, magicians, music acts and The Spitfires marching band who finished off the evening in style.

Speaking about the event actress Sarah Parish, who founded the charity with her husband James Murray in memory of their daughter Ella-Jayne, paid tribute to the community fundraising team who organised the evening at the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl.

She said: “It is really humbling to see this sort of support. I think building this new and much-needed children’s emergency department is such a positive cause to get behind, and you can see that here tonight.”

James added: “We are delighted and thrilled to be here. It is incredible and awe inspiring to have people get behind the appeal in this way.”

The event was supported by a number of Hampshire businesses who sponsored the evening and donated prizes to a silent auction and raffle that included private dining experiences, luxury holidays, and VIP experiences. A dress worn by Sarah at a BAFTA award ceremony was also auctioned off on the night.

The appeal needs £900,000 to hit its £2m goal which fundraisers hope to achieve with the ongoing support of community events and businesses around the South.
