A COUPLE who are tying the knot in Winchester on the same day as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been gifted a commemorative coin by the Royal Mint.

David Macfarlane, 30, and Bella Mead, 29, were given an uncirculated £5 coin that features an 'informal' portrait of the royal couple, produced to mark the occasion.

Also marrying on Saturday, David and Bella had already booked their wedding date when Harry and Meghan announced their engagement.

Insurance underwriter Bella said: "We have had a lot of comments from family and friends about the fact that our wedding is the same day as Meghan and Harry’s – although just for the record, we chose the date before theirs was announced.

"To be honest, our reaction was 'how are they organising a wedding so quickly?' But I guess they don’t have to worry about booking a venue."

The pair, who met at a friend's party and have been together for five years, said they were thrilled to have been gifted the commemorative coin.

The coin is available to buy from the Royal Mint uncirculated for £13, silver proof for £82.50 or gold proof for £1,980.

It features a 'casual' portrait of Harry and Meghan looking lovingly at each other, and was designed by Jody Clark, who created the current portrait of the Queen that has appeared on coins since 2015.

Bella, from London, added: "We’re thrilled [to have been gifted the coin]. It’s a lovely way to remember a fun and exciting time in our lives.

"I don’t think our weddings will be very similar – we are getting married in Winchester, near where David’s mum lives, and then the reception is in a converted barn nearby.

"We’re pretty sure the royal wedding will get mentioned in the speeches, along with the FA cup final.

"It’s lovely to have one of the Royal Mint coins as a reminder of the day, and we wish Meghan and Prince Harry all the best."

Other couples marrying on the same day as Meghan and Harry can apply to win one of 19 uncirculated coins.
