THIS was the state in which someone had left one of Winchester’s most important buildings last Thursday morning.
The medieval entrance to Hyde Abbey, the last resting place of King Alfred the Great, was left strewn with rubbish, to the fury of residents.
Edward Fennell, the founder of the Hyde 900 community history group, said: “Because of the neglect of the site it has the look and feel of a tip – no wonder people abuse it on a regular basis.
“Just bear in mind that this is all that remains - outside of St Bart’s church - of King Alfred’s burial place... although I recognise that it was trashed by Henry VIII as well so there is a precedent.”
It is not yet know where the rubbish came from.
