OVERNIGHT closures will be reinstated on one of Southampton’s busiest roads – as engineers look to finish a three-month improvement project.

Bassett Avenue will be closed for up to five nights between 8pm and 6am from Monday, April 30.

The closures, between Winchester Road and Chilworth Roundabout, will be put in place to allow engineers to apply an anti-skid surface to the road.

It comes after Southampton City Council’s transport team, Balfour Beatty, resurfaced the road for the first time in 16 years.

That work was preceded by a major repair project to the Bassett Avenue’s drainage system.

That work forced engineers to close the road for three weeks to all Southampton-bound traffic.

Mike Harris, Director of Growth at Southampton City Council, said: “This is the final phase of road closures which will complete our essential improvement work to Bassett Avenue.

“The resurfacing went to plan and ahead of time, despite the snow and ice we experienced in March.

“We will be carrying out these finishing touches overnight to minimise disruption.”

The anti-skid treatment reduces stopping distances and is applied at the approach to the three pedestrian crossings.

This type of treatment can only be applied to new road surfaces once the road has had time to cure and weather in sufficiently.

During the works, residents with no alternative access routes will be allowed access.

All other roads will be closed off from Bassett Avenue overnight.

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained via the shared use pavement.

Alternative routes will be signed, with local traffic diverted via Bassett Green Road.
