PLANS for a new home that were rejected by Winchester city councillors have been resubmitted, arguing that recent approvals indicate it wouldn't be harmful to the area.

Proposals to build a five-bedroom home next to the property at Overcross House, in Cross Way, Shawford were thrown out by the council's planning committee in January over objections that it would be out of keeping with the area's character.

Councillors had heard that the development would be overbearing and result in a strain on the local road network.

However, architect Tony Boyle told the January planning committee that there were a number of home nearby that were similar to the proposals.

Cllr Ian Tait added: With a small garage the impact – when you can hardly see it – I have to question. I think it's a good scheme."

Despite this, the planning committee voted to reject the proposals by six votes to three.

Now, following the approval of planning applications for new homes in the area, the proposal have been resubmitted.

In a planning statement, agent Savills said: "It is clear from the planning history at Smallwood and Southgate that the council considers that, in planning terms, the provision of new homes along Cross Way is acceptable and agree that this is not harmful or detrimental to the character of the area."

A decision is expected in late May.
