A WINCHESTER environmental group will be holding a free film screening as part of a multi media art exhibition on climate change organised by the University of Winchester this weekend.

WinACC (Winchester Action on Climate Change) will be screening the agricultural documentary “In Our Hands” on Saturday, February 3 at 4pm in the John Stripe Lecture Theatre on the King Alfred Campus on Sparkford Road, West Hill.

The documentary tells the story of a growing movement of farmers that are seeking to create a new kind of farm.

The film will be followed by a discussion led by Iain Stewart from the Landworkers’ Alliance (LWA), an organisation of people who make their livelihoods from producing food, fuel and fibre using sustainable methods of production.

The documentary looks at the UK food system, highlighting problems with the industrial food system, and presents a way forward for UK farming based on small farms, short supply chains and local control of our food.

WinACC’s Executive Director, Tom Brenan, said: “Our food choices clearly have an impact on our carbon footprint and agriculture currently accounts for 10 per cent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“This documentary highlights how a lower carbon approach is possible. The issue of food is one of a number of themes that WinACC will be focussing on in more detail this year”, added Mr Brenan.
