A SCHEME for a new house has been thrown out over objections that it would be out of keeping with local character.

City councillors rejected the proposal, which would have seen a new five-bedroom home build next to Overcross House, in Cross Way, Shawford.

Councillors heard that the development would be overbearing and result in a strain on local roads.

Among 30 objections was Compton and Shawford Parish Council, which argued that the detached double garage is out of keeping with the character of the area, as it would be in front of the building line.

Parish councillor Bob Jordan said: “A principle characteristic of this area is wide grass verges and properties set well back on each plot.

“It is not a question of whether or not the garage is situated in front of or behind a property, but one of respecting the existing building line and not building forward of that line.”

He added: “I’m concerned at the level of development with little or no consultation. Proposals are being pursued that are overbearing and out of keeping.”

Architect Tony Boyle told the committee that there were several homes nearby that were similar to the proposal.

The city council planning committee also heard that the new home would be occupied by the son of the Overcross House occupant, so he could see more of his mother.

Cllr Ian Tait said: “With a small garage the impact – when you can hardly see it – I have to question. I think it’s a good scheme.”

The planning committee voted to reject by six votes to three.
