IT WAS a golden celebration for a school as pupils and staff past and present gathered for its 50th anniversary.

Built in 1967, Hiltingbury Infant School in Chandler’s Ford never had an official opening ceremony, so the school community was determined to put that right by celebrating its anniversary in style.

Former staff and pupils were invited back for a tea party as part of a series of commemorative events.

Among the guests were Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Maureen Sollitt, and former councillor Godfrey Olsen, who first suggested a school should be built to accommodate the families moving into the newly developed Hiltingbury area.

Guests were entertained by pupils who performed 1960s-inspired songs and dance routines. The school choir also performed an original song, written by pupils and a parent, about the 50th anniversary.

Headteacher Cathy Moden said: “The tea party gave us the opportunity to share with our community our passionate belief that children should not only have great academic attainment but also develop lifelong skills which equip them to be responsible, confident and successful citizens of the future.

“We recognise that this is built on the foundations of the last 50 years and welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the many children and staff who have played their part in school’s journey.”

Ms Moden added: “We are delighted to be building on and enhancing our role within the Hiltingbury and Chandler’s Ford community and proud to be paving the way for the future.”
