ORGANISERS behind a project to replace a run-down sports pavilion at a Hampshire recreation ground have launched an appeal to help raise vital funds.

The Pavilion Project, which would see the dilapidated pavilion and scoring huts at North Walls Recreation Ground, in Winchester, replaced with a new sports and community building, is estimated to cost around £600,000.

As previously reported, Sport England agreed a contribution towards costs from the its Community Asset Fund, thought to be worth £50,000, but that would leave the project still facing a funding gap of around £150,000 after Winchester City Council allocated £300,000.

Now those behind the Pavilion Project are appealing for help to secure possibly another £25,000 towards the new buildings through Aviva Community Fund Awards 2017.

Mike Caldwell, project leader, said: “We are delighted with the news from Sport England.

"We have spoken to cricket and other sports teams and clubs, schools, colleges and local organisations. All have made it clear that the proposed new pavilion will stimulate much sports and community use that does not occur at present, all year round.

"It is a truly local project for local people and will become an asset for everyone but we must secure enough additional funding to make the project happen. If the existing buildings are not replaced, use of the two pitches for sport will inevitably decline."

Organisers are asking people to vote for The Pavilion Project in the awards to increase the chances of winning between £10,001 to £25,000. Each person can cast up to 10 votes and the projects with the most votes will become finalists.

Simon Jones, Hampshire Cricket Board's cricket development manager, said: "A new pavilion compliant with England and Wales Cricket Board design criteria at North Walls could greatly enhance sport and physical activity at a prime city centre venue.

"As well as offering the potential for expanding cricketing activities, including disability, women’s and junior cricket, a new pavilion at this location lends itself very well to further community activity and for use by other sporting groups.”
