EMERGENCY services rushed to Winchester Prison this morning after reports of a fire.

Four engines attended the scene at HMP Winchester on Romsey Road at around 9.47am this morning.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The latest is that it is out. There is no information yet on the cause.

"We sent four pumps to the scene, one from Winchester and three from Eastleigh."

A seperate incident saw paramedics also attend the prison at the same time to treat a prisoner for non-life threatening injuries.

The prisoner has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

A Prison Service spokesperson said the fire was limited to one cell and was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade, and that there were no injuries to staff or prisoners.

"Emergency services attended HMP Winchester on Monday 16 October to deal with two separate incidents involving five prisoners in total," he said.

"Both matters have now been resolved and will be referred to police for investigation. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
