EVER thought about buying Winchester Cathedral or perhaps even the Hampshire Chronicle? Well now you can – sort of.

Fans of city's landmarks will be able to become property magnates as Monopoly officially launched its Winchester version of the famous board game.

Winning Moves UK, makers of the game, says the launch forms part of the 200th anniversary celebrations marking Jane Austen’s death and added that it will be a “lasting legacy” to both Winchester and Ms Austen. They also say it is a “love letter to Winchester”, England’s former capital.

Benjamin Thompson, custom games manager at Winning Moves UK, said: “The game showcases Winchester’s crown jewels. It’s a celebration of – and a love letter to – Winchester.

“The game is a lasting legacy to the city and its people. We would like to thank everyone who has voted for the landmarks that appear and star on it."

Following a public vote landmarks such as the cathedral, Jane Austen's house in College Street, King Alfred's Statue and the Theatre Royal feature on the board game which is available in stores from today.

Homeless charity Trinity Winchester also features, replacing the Old Kent Road square because, Mr Thompson said, it provides disadvantaged people "the first rung on the housing ladder".

Sue McKenna, operations director at Trinity Winchester, said: "We are thrilled to have landed on Old Kent Road. Our work helps local people in need, as well as supporting the Winchester community.

"Being nominated to appear on the board shows that Trinity is considered a crucial part of the city."

The game will have Winchester-themed Community Chest and Chance cards, including one which rewards players for winning ‘a Jane Austen writing contest’, while another pays big dividends ‘gaining a First at Winchester University and landing a dream job’.

A Southampton version of the board game is also available to buy.
