Emergency services were scrambled to Royal Hampshire County Hospital for what turned out to be a false alarm.
A fire engine with command unit, police and paramedics rushed to the scene at Florence Portal House after an alarm was triggered in the maternity wing's toilets.
However, on arrival emergency teams found that there was no fire. A Winchester fireman at the scene said they believe the alarm was triggered by someone smoking in the toilets who inadvertently set it off.
According to staff at the hospital parts of the building were briefly placed on lock down but it was not evacuated.
