ALAN Titchmarsh, broadcaster, novelist and horticulturalist, talks to veteran television broadcaster and former presenter of BBC South Today Bruce Parker for an evening of music, memories and anecdotes on Friday May 19.

Mr Titchmarsh, Chancellor of Winchester University, will be at the event at the university to raise funds for historic churches.

Memorable Moments in Words and Music sees Alan talk about his musical influences and his long and varied career, from being a gardening apprentice aged 15, before moving into print and broadcast journalism and presenting programmes such as BBC Gardeners’ World and Ground Force.

He has also written nine novels, three volumes of autobiography and more than 50 gardening books.

Alan and Bruce know each other well, having worked together on BBC news and current affairs programme Nationwide.

Bruce was the first presenter of BBC Antiques Roadshow, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and during his time at the BBC he interviewed every Prime Minister from Anthony Eden to Tony Blair.

All proceeds go to the Hampshire and the Islands Historic Churches Trust which raises funds towards the upkeep of some 900 active historic churches in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight dating from the eighth to the 20th century.

This event is taking place by kind permission of the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Joy Carter, who is a Friend of the Trust and a keen supporter of its annual fund raiser, Ride and Stride, held on the second Saturday in September every year.

The talk is at 7.15pm on Friday May 19, in The Stripe, King Alfred Campus, Sparkford Road, SO22 4NR.

The talk is preceded by a reception from 6.15pm.

Tickets cost £18 each and can be booked online at: www.winchester.ac.uk/memorablemoments
