SEVEN Hampshire mayors are set to to brave a terrifying abseil down a Hampshire landmark this weekend.

On Sunday the Mayor of Winchester councillor Jane Rutter and others will abseil 100 metres down the Spinnaker Tower.

The magnificent seven as they have been dubbed, includes the Mayors of Havant, Gosport, Eastleigh, Portsmouth, East Hampshire and Southampton.

The group is taking part to raise money for charities including The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, Help 4 Special Children and The Oncology and Haematology department at Queen Alexandra Hospital. They hope to support with purchasing a state-of-the-art blood testing machine that will provide results within 10 minutes, rather than the present 4-5 hour wait.

To provide them with musical assistance will be The Harmony Men Male Voice Choir from Jersey, who will serenade the group with their varied repertoire of traditional male choir songs, operatic pieces, folk songs and classic hymns.

Cllr Rutter has already has some experience with abseiling as she abseiled down Winchester Fire Station in February.

General Manager at Gunwharf Quays, Colin Wilding said: “The Big Drop Challenge is set to be quite a spectacle and we are thrilled to support with some fantastic entertainment in the form of the classic car display. Of course, visitors will also be able to enjoy the variety of waterfront bars and restaurants – all perfect for watching the ‘Magnificent Seven’ attempt their abseil challenge."
