A FIRE which ripped through a Winchester house last night took 30 firefighters more than two-and-a-half hours to get under control.

Crews were called to the detached home, in Edward Road, St Cross, at 9.20pm after the residents were alerted by a smoke alarm.

Crews discovered a severe fire on the first floor of the property that had spread to the roof space.

Around 30 firefighters used jets to bring the fire under control by about 11.40pm.

The residents were supported by the Red Cross's Fire and Emergency Support Service.

No-one was injured in the incident and an investigation will take place to establish the cause.

The householder today declined to speak to the Chronicle and asked the reporter to leave the privately-owned Edward Road.
