A man has died after being hit by a train, causing delays in Hampshire.

The incident happened just after 2pm at Portchester Station, between Fareham and Portsmouth.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers were alerted and attended alongside paramedics from the South Central Ambulance Service. Work is now underway to identify the man and inform his family.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Passengers are being warned that cancellations or delays of up to an hour are expected until 7pm.

A resident next to the station said: “All of this was here when I got home, I've literally just seen it.

“It has happened before and it’s always horrible to see.

"It happens too often here.”

Tickets are being accepted on local bus routes.

There is also disruption on the Winchester to London line after a freight train broke down.

A Fareham resident, who did not want to be identified, said: “I come this way every day and unfortunately I have seen it before.

“It's one of those stations where the trains don't always stop and these incidents can happen.”
