Hundreds of people took to the streets of Winchester to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community in Hampshire.

The county council and University of Winchester joined forces to celebrate diversity and inclusion at the third annual Hampshire Pride event on Saturday.

The event was organised by the council's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) employee network and the University of Winchester LGBTI Spectrum Student, Staff and Allies Network.

Floods of colourful supporters paraded through the city’s university campus towards the Elizabeth II Court building, cheering and blowing whistles as motorists tooted them on.

The city was brought to a near standstill as spectators applauded and filmed the army of youngsters and adults, the majority of whom held banners, signs and flags.

Leading the line was Winchester mayor Cllr Jane Rutter, who said: "I'm delighted to be here supporting Hampshire Pride and parading with this wonderful group of people.

"I feel very strongly about promoting and celebrating diversity - it's another of the things that makes Winchester the best place to live in the country.

"I'm delighted with today's turnout. It's very encouraging that in a world where gay rights are under attack, we are standing up for diversity and celebrating LGBT rights in Winchester."

Roy Perry, leader of Hampshire County Council, added: “This year's affair was bigger and better than last year and there was a very positive spirit and a lot of good humour.

"From the council's perspective, we respect all individuals and believe in equality and diversity. We are very pleased to play our part in helping the Hampshire Pride event.”
