SPORTING achievements in the Winchester area have been celebrated.

The winners of the 2016 Winchester District Sports awards were revealed at the Holiday Inn to reward the hard work and commitment of local coaches, volunteers, sportsmen and women.

This was the ninth of these annual awards and was organised by the Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA).

The event was hosted by Kevan James, from BBC Radio Solent, and complemented by an inspiring opening talk from Mandy Hickson, the SPAA ambassador.

An outstanding 97 nominations were made before the judging panel selected the winners.

Awards were handed out on the night by Cllr Jane Rutter, the Mayor of Winchester, along with the sponsors.

The assembled crowd of 250 were treated to a dance display by Winchester Wolves from the University of Winchester Dance Squad.

Cllr Lisa Griffiths, portfolio holder for health & wellbeing, said: “It’s great to be part of such an inspiring evening. The high number of nominations highlights the calibre of sporting talent within the district.”

Pete Leamore, chairman of the SPAA, said: “The awards are a fantastic way to celebrate the amazing achievements and commitments made by our sporting community. Those who have been involved in this evening should be incredibly proud of what they have accomplished over the past 12 months.”
