A MAN who dumped waste across Hampshire has been jailed for a year.

A councillor welcomed the strong sentence given to Ashley Mooney and said she hoped the prosecution would show the council "means business" in tackling fly-tipping.

Ashley Mooney, who used to live in Gosport, pleaded guilty to flytipping offences in Fareham, Gosport, Winchester and Portsmouth and was jailed for 12 months at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court.

The crimes included waste discovered at Forest Lane in Wickham, Pigeon House Lane in Southwick, Dead Lane in Bishop's Waltham and Chidden Lane in Hambledon.

Councillor Lisa Griffiths, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: “This is another fly-tipping prosecution which shows we mean business here in the Winchester district.

“I am pleased that the court recognised the seriousness of this case and hope the outcome sends a clear message to others who think they can flout the law: Winchester will not tolerate fly-tipping in its district.

“We will, wherever possible, take those we have evidence against through to prosecution. This case proves that cross-authority collaboration is beneficial for all involved and we look forward to working in a similar vein in the future.”

Mooney, who now lives in Liverpool, was also made the subject of a five-year criminal behaviour order.
