THE mayor of Winchester has announced the launch of the Winchester District Community Awards for 2017.

The awards recognise and celebrate the organisations and individuals who give outstanding service to the people and places of the city and its districts.

Cllr Rutter said: “The aim of these awards is to celebrate the selfless activity that brightens the lives of many residents, and makes our district such a wonderful place in which to live.”

The Mayor is now inviting nominations of individuals and organisations, which can be made by anyone.

As in previous years, the emphasis is firmly on voluntary action, but there is also scope to pay tribute to those who routinely go above and beyond the call of duty during the course of their paid employment.

Cllr Rutter added: “We know that people really treasure these awards. Our district is fortunate in having such a strong volunteering community.

"Their contribution of time and skills each year provides practical support and companionship for the most vulnerable in our society. Volunteers are also the mainstay of most of the sporting, cultural and leisure organisations which enrich our lives and keep us healthy."

To make a nomination you can contact your district councillor or parish council with details of your nominee so that they can submit the nomination on your behalf for consideration by the selection panel.

You can also nominate somebody directly with the online form at www.winchester.gov.uk.

All nominees will receive a certificate of appreciation, and a small number will be selected to receive mayor’s volunteering awards.

Details of your district councillor or parish council can also be found on the Winchester City Council website.

The closing date for nominations is February 10 and the nominees will be invited to attend the awards ceremony in Guildhall Winchester on March 29.

If you wish to discuss your nomination or any aspect of the awards please contact the mayor’s secretary on 01962 848 259 or email mayorssecretary@winchester.gov.uk
