A historic first will be held in Winchester next month.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas, will sit at Winchester Law Courts on February 14.

It will be the first time that the most senior judge in England and Wales will have sat as the Court of Appeal in Winchester.

He will sit with the two Presiding Judges of the Western Circuit, Mr Justice Dingemans and Mrs Justice May for the day The most senior judge in Winchester is Judge Keith Cutler, the Recorder of Winchester,said : “We have never had the Court of Appeal Criminal Division sitting in Winchester, since the court started in Victorian times.

“I’m very keen about the Lord Chief Justice coming down. It is a way of showing and recognising that places like Winchester are important legal centres.”

The three judges will stay the night before in the Judge’s Lodgings in the Cathedral Close.

The visit to Winchester is an attempt to make the justice system less London-dominated and the Court of Appeal has already sat in Liverpool and Bristol, said Judge Cutler.
