TRIBUTES have been paid to a young Hampshire man who was struck by a car.

Jonathon Whitfield,21, from Cheriton was struck by a white Ford Kuga on the A33 at Kings Worthy at the Cart and Horses junction.

The news came as safety campaigners handed in a petition calling on council chiefs at Hampshire County Council to make the notorious junction safer just hours later.

The incident happened on November 23 at around 5.30pm.

Mr Whitfield was taken to Southampton General Hospital but sadly died from his injuries the next morning.

His dad Terry Whitfield Stone has today paid tribute to him.

Mr Whitfied Stone said: “Jonathon was a much loved son who will be sadly missed by myself, Toby, his grandparents, his brothers, his sisters, his family and friends.”

As reported in the Daily Echo, campaigners say that the the speed limit is too high and should be cut to 40mph and that recent changes to the layout of the 'Cart and Horses Junction' have made things worse.

The petition has been signed by more than 400 people.

Investigations into the collision which closed the stretch of road from the junction with the B3047 near the Cart and Horses to the Winnall interchange at junction 9 of the M3, are ongoing.

The driver of the Ford Kuga, a 45-year-old man from Chandler’s Ford, was uninjured.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sgt Jon Bates on 101, quoting 44160442729.
